Scott Mercer

CEO

Scott Mercer is the CEO of Focused Energy (Focused), a groundbreaking company working to commercialize laser fusion and open the door to the next great chapter of global economic growth. A champion of the transformative power of fusion, Scott is passionate about fusion’s potential to decouple energy production from resource consumption for the first time in history.

As CEO, Scott sets the company’s overall strategic vision, drives business development, and leads a global team of world-class scientists, engineers, and business leaders pursuing the clearest and most advanced path to commercial fusion. Led by the scientists that achieved gain in 2022, Focused is working to take the laser fusion system developed at Lawrence Livermore National Lab (LLNL) and transform it into a viable commercial pathway to clean, limitless power.

Under Scott’s leadership, the company is developing a global footprint to tap into the deep fusion talent pools in Europe and the United States. This includes the fusion industry’s only privately run fusion fuel development laboratory in Darmstadt, Germany; a state-of-the-art laser development facility in the San Francisco Bay Area; an integrated engineering facility that will combine the company’s proprietary fuel and laser technologies; and ultimately a fusion pilot plant.

Focused is taking laser fusion from the pages of science fiction to the realm of real-world engineering. In the process, Focused will help develop the global supply chain required for the first generation of laser fusion power plants in the 2030’s.

Scott joined Focused in 2024 after a successful stint as founder and CEO of Volta Charging. During this time, Scott took the EV charging company from idea to commercialization to IPO, transforming the startup into an energy infrastructure powerhouse. His approach delivered an innovative business model that accelerated the adoption of clean energy while providing a unique value proposition for businesses and consumers.

In his spare time, Scott enjoys restoring classic cars in his garage. This experience not only provides him with hands-on skills but also served as a financial foundation for starting his first company. When he isn’t fixing cars, Mercer has a vintage Alfa Romeo that he races at Sonoma Raceway.
